Soil composition and soil erosion

Summary: 
Free experimentation with soil. One station investigates the components of different soil types. The other station investigates how soil is moved by water.

Procedure: 

I used Wasserman's Play-Debrief-Replay model (see the New Teaching Elementary Science resource) for this lesson.

Set up two stations: soil sieving and soil erosion.
Students spend 20 minutes on one station, making notes on what they find, then switch to the other station.

Discuss as a class what they found in terms of organic and mineral matter, as in Soil component identification.
Then ask students to think of one part of either activity that they would like to investigate further, and to form a question to ask.
Assist students in wording their question so that they can compare two situations with the materials available.
Students can then return to the materials to investigate their question.
