Hibernation

Summary
Learn about the fat and fur, particularly on a hibernating bear, and how it builds and uses such insulation for hibernation.

Procedure

Start with modelling why we have seasons.
One way of getting through the winter is to hibernate.

Students rotate between three stations (5 mins or so each):

Fur study
Look at real fur, to find the guard hairs and the fluffy underfur.

Fur for keeping warm
Feel a bottle of iced water through fur and cloths of different thicknesses.

Fat for keeping warm
Feel a bottle of iced water through a layer of fat.

Both the fat and fur stop heat from leaving your hand, so they keep it warm. They are insulators.
Bears have thick fur and a layer of fat to keep warm.
The fur and fat layers both get thicker before hibernation.

The fur also protects against wet and wind.
The fat is also an energy reserve for the bears. At the end of hibernation a lot of the fat has gone, as the body has used it up.
Fat is also broken down to get water during hibernation.

End with Bear food as a demonstration. Add food to a scale until it tips (at 5kg), to show just a snack for a black bear before it hibernates. This period of eating huge amounts to put on fat is called 'hyperphagia'.

Other activity ideas:

1. Feel our heart rate and our breathing rate. When a bear hibernates its heart rate slows down (from 50bpm to 10bpm) and it breathes less (one breath every 45 seconds).
Take our temperature. When an animal hibernates its temperature drops.

They hibernate for about 4 months.
Bears lower heart rate to a third, but only drop body temp by a degree (like us at night).
Dormant bears do not eat, drink, urinate or defaecate, the heart rate drops from 50–60 beats/min to 8–12/beats min, and oxygen consumption is only 32% of that of actively foraging bears.

Other hibernation info:
Dry fluffy snow on top of a den also holds air, which stops heat from leaving the den.
Bears need water during hibernation - they get it from their body fat, when the fat molecules are broken down for energy.

Animal prints

Summary
Make animal footprints in playdough or modelling clay, or look at print-outs of life-size animal prints.

  • animal paw cast(s), if available and playdough or modelling clay
  • or use a stamp of animal prints, ink and paper
  • or look at print-outs of life-size animal prints
Procedure

If casts or stamps are available, make animal prints, and optionally your own hand print.

Measure how long the animal footprint and your handprint is, to compare their sizes.
Record the number the toes or fingers. Do they have the same number of fingers/toes as us?
Make other comparative observations.

Note:
Often the animal footprint is only the front part of their foot, as they walk on their toes. If so, infer how long the real foot might be.

Fur for keeping warm

Summary
Feel how a layer of fur can stop your hands from getting cold.

Materials
  • pieces of cloth of varying thickness, including very thin and furry
  • iced water in a capped recycled drink bottle e.g. gatorade
Procedure

Hold the bottle of iced water, to feel how cold it is.
Then wrap the bottle in each cloth in turn, and feel whether the cloth can keep your hand warmer.
(Note that if your hands get very cold from the ice, it will be hard to tell what the cloth does, so encourage students to use each hand in turn to give them time to adjust between each test.)

Students should find that the thicker, more furry, cloths keeps their hand warmer.
The air trapped in the thicker fibres insulates from the cold (i.e. it prevents heat from moving away from your hand).

Animal fur and feathers trap air to keep animals warm, sometimes from extreme cold.
Local animals with thick fur include bears, otters.

Bears moult annually in the early summer.  They shed both their underfur and outer guard hairs, leaving only a short, sleek summer undercoat.  Their new coat is growing in as the old one is being shed, so that by fall they have their thick, luxurious coats once again.

Fat test for keeping warm

Summary
Feel iced water through a layer of fat, and realise its insulating property,

Materials
  • 1/2 block lard flattened inside a medium baggie, then double bagged
  • control baggies with no lard
  • iced water in a disposable bottle e.g. gatorade
Procedure

Before the lesson make bags of fat:
Put half a block of lard in a medium ziplock baggie, and flatten it out.
Zip closed, then zip inside a second baggie.
Make a second control set with no fat: two baggies, one inside the other.

Hold the fat bag on your hand, then place a bottle of iced water on top of it.
Do you feel cold? (No)
Then do the same with the control bag. Do you feel cold? (Yes)
The fat is insulating and will stop you from feeling cold.

I found that with young students, iced water often spilled into a blubber glove when they pushed it into the iced water.)

When bears hibernate, and the temperature outside is really cold (way colder than this water). They have a layer of fat under their skin which insulates them from the cold (it stops the cold from leaving their bodies).
Feel your fat under your skin by pinching your skin. Your fat is less than a cm thick. Hibernating black bears have a fat layer about 4cm thick. Polar bears have a fat layer up to 11 cm thick.

Background information: heat moves through fat half as fast as through muscle or other kinds of water-based body tissue. But for animals keeping warm, passive heat conduction rates is probably less important than controlling the paths of blood flow through the body e.g. using counter-current systems. Fat tissue near the skin can survive for hours without any blood going through it.

Notes

Original activity design:
Students put one index finger in a cut off disposable glove finger, and the other in a glove finger coated in fat (vaseline).
Students put both fingers in the water, and wait until one feels cold. They record which stayed warmer longer.

Bird feeder

Summary
Each student makes a bird feeder, that can be hung outside a classroom window, or on the school grounds

Materials

For each child:

  • Paper plate
  • Pine cone
  • Lard
  • Posicle stick
  • Birdseed
  • Pipecleaner
Procedure

Loop the pipcleaner under the scales at the bottom end of the pinecone, going around several turns, but leaving a stretch of pipecleaner, so it can be hung up. Spread lard on the pipcone under the scales with the popsicle stick. Sprinkle the seeds over the lard. Hang the feeders outside, near a window, so the feeding birds can be observed.
I have used plastic coated wire (thick electrical wire) strung from a window hook to a nearby tree (hung in a loop, so that it can be rotated to hang on each feeder), and between trees (with a long free end that can be used to lower and raise the line, and tie it off around a tree trunk).
Or students can take it home to hang.

Possible items to add near the feeders:
Bird identification guide. Add a tally to mark off how many of each kind of bird students spot. See the resource website for excellent bird images and bird calls.

Birds eat the seeds, which are part of a plant.

Snail study and habitat

Summary
Students look closely at snails, then collect materials to make them a habitat that can be kept in the classroom.

Introduce snails to students
Today we will study them closely. Then we will put them in a tank so they are safe and we can watch them.
Talk about how to treat them gently.

Look closely at snails

Show students the glass terrarium we will put the snails in. Ask what else should we put in.
Talk about basic needs of snails, and add materials to list on the board as they come up.
Include needs that would use soil, leaves, food, water.

Snail close observation

Summary

Procedure

Snails are placed on the undersurface of an inverted glass bowl, and put in the middle of a table group.
Students can observe the snails moving, including the muscles rippling on the underside of the body.
Talk as a class about how they move, how they sense etc.
Students describe their observations and/or write a poem about the snail (shape poem can be written on a simple drawing of a snail).
Adults can hand the students a snail to touch - this will help inspire their writing.

Make sure snails are kept cool, and do not keep too long indoors.

Snail habitat

Summary
Students collect materials needed by snails to survive and set up a snail habitat

  • Aquarium or other glass tank
  • Area of school grounds to collect sand, soil, leaves, grass, twigs
  • Snails - most easily found in the fall and spring, when it is not too hot or too cold
Procedure

Students go outside to collect materials for the snail habitat:
sand for the bottom of the habitat (to hold water)
soil (for hiding in)
leaves and grass (for hiding in and eating)
sticks (for climbing on)

Back in the classroom, each student adds their item to the terrarium while saying what the snail needs their item for.
Start by adding sand to the tank, and add water to it to make it moist. Then add soil, moistening it if necessary. Then add leaves, grass and twigs.

Watch the tank carefully, for what the snail eats and does not eat, then add more plant items that are eaten.
Make sure the tank does not get hot (keep away from heaters), and do not keep snails too long indoors.

Friction challenge: move the teacher

Summary
Students use their knowledge of friction and how to reduce it to move the teacher sitting on a board on a carpet.

Materials
  • Large board for teacher to sit on
  • Floor space, ideally with different surfaces to use e.g. carpet and tile
  • marbles, rollers or something that can go under the board and roll
  • ice cubes
Procedure

Challenge: move your teacher on the board only by changing the friction
Students stand around the teacher sitting on a board in the middle of the carpet.
Can a student push the teacher on the board? No - too much friction between the board and the carpet.
Ask for ideas for making the friction less so that we can push the teacher. Try each idea at a time to see how they affect the friction.
Ideas that may come up:
Use a greater force to push her, a force strong enough to overpower the force of friction. Add number of students pushing.
Move the board to the less bumpy floor e.g. tile. Less friction there.
Use a rolling shape - wheels, rollers or marbles - add them under the board, to reduce friction. (Hold on! They dramatically reduce the friction)
Use a lubricant - add something slippery (ice, or oil, or bubble mix) - ice works well.

Notes

For a class that did not previously study reducing friction using rolling surfaces, we focused on the different floor types for reducing friction under the board. Students guessed what would happen when marbles were added, then we discussed why they reduced the friction.

Procedure

Do a selection of the activities. See notes for different lesson plans I have done.

Optional coin game in its simple form with just flicking a coin across different surfaces is good to start with for students to discover and define friction.

Define and demonstrate friction:
Friction is a force that slows things down. It happens when two things rub together.
If I slide this block, it stops after a while, because the block is rubbing against the cardboard.

Students slide blocks down ramps at their desks.
Discuss the surfaces and talk about why they have the least and most friction.
Bumpy surfaces rub against the block more, and slow it down more.
Write on board: under less friction put smoother surface, under more friction put bumpier surface.

Show how friction can be reduced
A fun challenge to reinforce how to reduce friction: Reduce friction to move the teacher.

Friction on a bike to show friction and reduced friction used to our advantage.

Wrap up discussion, ending with:
Why do our hands get warm when we rub them?
Friction! Friction makes heat.
Man first made fire by rubbing two sticks together (500,000 years ago) - the friction between them makes so much heat that it can start a fire.
